Oscar Antoli

Oscar Antoli and Alexia Chrysomalli are two remarkable musicians who have made significant contributions to the world of jazz, particularly through their unique blend of Mediterranean and Balkan musical styles.

Oscar Antoli, born in Tortosa, Spain, is a clarinetist and composer who has made Vienna his home. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz and Modern Music Studies from the Catalonia College of Music (ESMUC) and a Master’s degree in Turkish Music from the Codarts Rotterdam University of the Arts. This diverse educational background has allowed him to develop a unique style that combines elements of jazz with traditional Turkish and Mediterranean music. His work often features collaborations with musicians from various cultural backgrounds, reflecting his commitment to exploring the connections between different musical traditions.

Alexia Chrysomalli, on the other hand, is a Greek singer, composer, and guitarist. Her music is deeply rooted in the rich traditions of her homeland, but she also draws inspiration from jazz and other contemporary musical styles. Her collaborations with Antoli have resulted in a series of captivating performances and recordings that showcase their shared love for Mediterranean and Balkan music.

Together, Antoli and Chrysomalli form the Metamorphosis Duo, a project that aims to explore the musical landscapes of the Mediterranean and Balkan regions. Their work is characterized by a deep respect for tradition, combined with a willingness to experiment and innovate. Their performances often feature a blend of original compositions and traditional songs, presented in a way that highlights the connections between these different musical styles.

One of their notable collaborations is the album “Isthmus,” which features a diverse lineup of guest artists, including Kurdish singer Sakîna Teyna, flamenco dancer Marco de Ana, Persian guitar wizard Mahan Mirarab, and many others. This album showcases their ability to bring together musicians from different cultural backgrounds and create a cohesive musical whole.

In conclusion, Oscar Antoli and Alexia Chrysomalli are two outstanding musicians who have made significant contributions to the world of jazz. Their unique blend of Mediterranean and Balkan musical styles, combined with their commitment to collaboration and innovation, has resulted in a body of work that is both deeply rooted in tradition and forward-looking. Their music is a testament to the power of music to transcend boundaries and bring people together.
