The Vlatos Community Center – The Heart of Village Life
Tucked beside the main church in the center of Vlatos, the community center (αίθουσα) has served as the village’s living room since it was built in 1993. This modest but vital building was created by the villagers themselves to give the community a shared space for both everyday needs and life’s milestones.Inside you’ll find a small office occasionally used by visiting doctors, a spacious kitchen where meals are prepared for gatherings, clean toilets, and one large main room filled with sturdy tables and chairs that comfortably seats about 150 people. The room is simple, practical, and welcoming — exactly what a mountain village needs.
This is where the year begins with the traditional cutting of the vasilopita (New Year’s pie) in January, shared among families with wishes for health and prosperity. In September, the space comes alive for the celebration of the village’s patron saint, filled with music, food, and laughter. Baptisms, weddings, and funerals all find a natural home here: families gather, stories are told, tears and joy mingle, and the community holds one another close.
Every autumn the center hosts the beloved Chestnut Festival — tables groaning with roasted chestnuts, local cheese, honey, and raki, while villagers and visitors sit together, cracking shells and sharing warmth against the cooling mountain air.
More than just a building, the Vlatos Community Center is the heartbeat of daily life and the anchor for every celebration and sorrow. It is where the village comes together — to eat, to mourn, to dance, to remember, and to keep the spirit of Vlatos alive, one shared moment at a time.

- The Keeper of Springs and Bells: Pantelis Vaidakis, Heart of VlatosPantelis Vaidakis is the quiet guardian who keeps Vlatos flowing and ringing true. Born and raised in the village’s stone lanes, he sailed the world on Greek merchant ships before returning home with the steady hands of a man who knows both oceans and mountains. Today he tends the churches—lighting candles, dusting icons, ringing bells that echo over the valleys—while maintaining the ancient springs that bring water to every house and field. With his wife Johanna, he works their gardens, vineyards, and olive trees, raising three sons (Giannis, George, Kostas) in the rhythm of seasons and family. As honorary mayor of Vlatos and best man to Martin Vlatos, he stood witness at the wedding under open Cretan sky, a pillar of trust and tradition. Pantelis doesn’t speak of duty; he lives it—one repaired channel, one tended vine, one bell at vespers. The village breathes because he keeps its lifeblood moving and its soul awake.
- The Builder of Milia: George’s Unyielding Hands and Heart for VlatosGeorge Makrakis never left the mountain—he simply refused to let it fade. Born and raised in Vlatos under the same thyme-scented sky, he learned early that love for the land means hard work and reverence. With Jacob Tsourounakis, he became the muscle behind Milia Mountain Retreat: hauling stone, planting chestnut groves, rebuilding ruins by hand until the abandoned settlement bloomed into one of the world’s first true eco-lodges, celebrated by National Geographic in 1998. A deeply religious man and tireless guardian of Innachorio’s sustainability, he fought alongside old friends like Kostas Koukourakis to protect forests, gorges, and the slow Cretan rhythm. Today, as vice-mayor of Kastelli for Tourism and Culture, he shapes a future that honors the past. To Martin Vlatos, he is best man and brother—handing over the keys to the old church and schoolhouse, planting the seed for candlelit jazz under the stars. George doesn’t speak of heroism; he lives it, one restored stone at a time. The mountain still stands because of him.
