New Album Live – Violin Journeys Through Solitude & Soul

Experience a deeply personal and atmospheric evening as Maria Manousaki and her Quartet perform selections from her latest album “Behind Closed Doors” in the hushed, candlelit glow of Vlatos Music Hall—the historic 150-year-old stone church in the serene mountain village of Vlatos, western Crete. As the festival’s curator, violinist, and visionary force behind Vlatos Jazz since its inception, Maria Manousaki brings her signature blend of lyrical intensity, modal exploration, and contemporary jazz sensibility to the forefront. “Behind Closed Doors” is an introspective journey—evocative compositions that whisper secrets of solitude, longing, and quiet revelation, drawing from Greek musical roots, jazz improvisation, and chamber-like delicacy.Joined by her trusted quartet (piano, bass, drums/percussion—exact lineup to be confirmed), expect shimmering violin lines floating over rich harmonies, subtle rhythmic undercurrents, and moments of profound stillness—all rendered with crystalline clarity in the church’s legendary natural acoustics. No amplification, just pure, unfiltered emotion echoing through the ancient stone walls under Cretan starlight.

Maria Manousaki stands as a beacon in the world of music, particularly in the realm of jazz and world music. Born in Johannesburg of bicultural parentage, her musical journey began with the violin at a tender age. Her talent and dedication to her craft led her to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA, where she earned an Honors Degree in Professional Music.

Since her arrival in New York, Maria has performed alongside some of the world’s most renowned musicians, releasing two outstanding albums: “Sole Voyage” and “Hidden Trails.” These albums are a testament to her unique blend of Cretan melodies woven into a tapestry of jazz with polyrhythmic percussion. “Sole Voyage” won the best jazz album at the “academia awards” in 2016, and “Hidden Trails” was released in 2021.

Maria’s music is not just about the notes and melodies; it’s about the stories she tells through her violin. Her inspiration for “Hidden Trails” stems from her respect for those who stand up to an overpowering enemy to defend their freedom, beliefs, and rights. The result is an ear fest of vibrant, dramatic, and exhilarating sounds on the one hand, and expressive, melancholic melodies on the other.

Maria is not just a musician; she’s a musical curator, a founder of the Cretan World Music Festival, and the musical curator for the Vlatos Jazz series. Her commitment to the world of music is not just about her performances but also about creating platforms for other musicians to showcase their talents.

Her performances, whether as part of the “Puentes” project or in her individual capacity, are a testament to her deep understanding and respect for the genre, and her ability to improvise and create music in the moment is nothing short of mesmerizing.

In conclusion, Maria Manousaki is more than just a violinist; she’s a storyteller, a curator, and a bridge between cultures. Her music transcends boundaries, bringing people together in a celebration of diversity and unity. She is a force to be reckoned with in the world of music, and her contributions to the genre are invaluable.
