Whispers of the oud
Step into an enchanting evening as Thomas Meleteas and his Middle Eastern Trio weave timeless threads of modal music, improvisation, and jazz-infused Mediterranean grooves in the candlelit intimacy of Vlatos Music Hall—the beautifully restored 150-year-old stone church in the tranquil mountain village of Vlatos, western Crete.Greek oudist and composer Thomas Meleteas (Athens-born, 1993), renowned for his deep exploration of Mediterranean modal traditions, Greek repertoires, and contemporary jazz, leads this evocative trio. Drawing from his acclaimed work—blending oud’s resonant, storytelling voice with rhythmic vitality and harmonic depth—the performance promises original compositions alongside inspired nods to Middle Eastern maqams, Greek folk echoes, and improvisational freedom.Expect luminous oud lines dancing over subtle percussion and bass (or supporting instrumentation), creating hypnotic, soul-stirring soundscapes that feel both ancient and urgently modern—all delivered acoustically in the church’s legendary natural acoustics, with no amplification needed. The result: pure, immersive music that connects cultures under starlit Cretan skies.
