Ross Daly, the maestro of world music, is a fascinating figure with a musical journey as diverse as the instruments he plays. Born in England to Irish parents, Ross grew up in a whirlwind of cultures, from Canada to the US, Japan, and England, before finding his musical home on the island of Crete in Greece. This diverse upbringing and his extensive travels have given him a unique perspective on music, culture, and life.

Ross’s musical journey began with the cello in his childhood years in America, followed by the classical guitar in Japan at the age of eleven. His deep interest in music emerged early, leading him to explore the great modal traditions of the Middle East, Central Asia, and the Indian Subcontinent. These musical traditions, with their ability to take one beyond perceived boundaries into transpersonal realms of experience, became the focus of his life.

Over the years, Ross has mastered a variety of instruments, including the Cretan lyra, the Tarhu, the Afghan rabab, the Turkish saz, the Oud, and the North Indian sitar. His mastery extends to designing instruments of his own, such as the Cretan lyra with 22 sympathetic strings and the Nak Tarhu, developed with Australian luthier Peter Biffin.

Ross’s music is a unique blend of traditional and contemporary modal music. He draws heavily on the knowledge and techniques he acquired from his apprenticeships in various musical traditions, creating compositions that are a testament to his deep understanding and respect for these traditions.

In addition to his work as a musician, Ross is the founder of the Musical Workshop Labyrinth, an educational institution dedicated to the study of the world’s modal musical traditions. He also served as the artistic director of the cultural program of the Olympic Games for the Olympic city of Heraklion on the island of Crete.

Despite the economic crisis in Greece, Ross remains committed to his music, believing that a musician’s job is simply to be a clean channel for the music to reach and touch people according to their nature and spiritual state. His music provides something that is increasingly difficult to find in modern times: a sense of continuity and unity, connecting the natural flow of ancient traditions with the complex needs of today’s world.

Ross Daly is more than just a musician. He is a bridge between cultures, a guardian of ancient traditions, and a creator of contemporary modal music. His life and work are a testament to the power of music to transcend boundaries and bring people together.
