    Vlatos Jazz 2023 Opening: Swinging Strings featuring Maria Manousaki

    Swinging Strings is comprised of four of the most active professional musicians in Greece,

    Having played hundreds of live dates over the years, they have performed in literally every type of venue, from private parties, restaurants and clubs, hotel and convention events, to festivals, international tours and studio dates.

    Their repertoire includes hundreds of Jazz standards tunes, and a selection of pop songs and movie themes, arranged in the idiom of jazz and swing, which is the stylistic focus of the band.

    Music From Around The World

    Three accomplished musicians all from the world of jazz, Maria Manousaki, Lefteris Papadakis and Sakis Tsinoukas meet for the first time to present a musical evening with sounds from different parts of the world. The musical pieces that will be heard come from Latin America, Portugal, Spain, Greece and the USA and will be presented in a very special way of performance.

    Maria Manousaki stands as one of Greece’s most successful and versatile musical talents, working to great acclaim and commercial success as a violin performer, band leader, composer, festival organizer and curator. Maria’s musical style can be best categorized within the jazz and world music scene.

    Maria Manousaki was born in Johannesburg of bicultural parentage, her base is in New York but commutes between the island of Crete and New York.
    She received a scholarship from the world renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA, earning an Honors Degree in Professional Music in 2002.

    Since her arrival in New York, Maria has performed alongside some of the worlds most renowned musicians and has released two outstanding albums: Sole Voyage and Hidden Trails.

    Maria is the founder of The Cretan World Music Festival which was initiated in Hania Crete in July 2014.

    She is also the musical curator for the Vlatos Jazz series taking place in the island of Crete since 2018.

    The trio around drummer Felix Schrack is very happy to perform at Vlatos Jazz as part of their release tour of the album “Songs and Thoughts”, which was released in 2022, and to present the music.
     A colorful mix of traditional jazz and avant-garde sounds awaits you, but always with groove and swing.
    The trio is very excited to perform a set with Maria Manousaki, playing their favorite jazz standards,
     knowing that music includes no boundaries or other barriers, but speaks its own empathetic language.

    Κίσσαμος… αστείρευτη κοιτίδα πολιτισμού με πλούσια μουσική παράδοση που βαστάει γερά τα ηνία και της απονέμεται η ονομασία “Η γενέτειρα των συρτών”. Ζηλευτή σε όλα της, στους ρυθμούς της, στα παιξίματά της, στη δυναμική της. Δεν χρειάζεται να πούμε πολλά… η Κισσαμίτικη μουσική αποτελεί από μόνη της ένα μουσικό είδος ανεπανάληπτο και άκρως επιστημονικό για μελέτη. Μάνα μεγάλων συνθετών της Κρήτης μας, γέννησε σκοπούς ανεξίτηλους στο χρόνο και που θα παίζονται όσο θα στέκει αυτός ο τόπος.

    Άξιοι εκπρόσωποι αυτής της μουσικής παράδοσης είναι τα «Δοξάρια της Κισσάμου» που σας παρουσιάζουμε μέσα από αυτή την έκδοση και πιο συγκεκριμένα με αλφαβητική σειρά οι: Δημήτρης Βακάκης, Νίκος Βρουλάκης, Διαμαντής Κοσιδεκάκης, Μιχάλης Λουφαρδάκης, Γιάννης Πολυχρονάκης, Μάρκος Ρενιέρης, Μιχάλης Σαπουνάκης, Στρατής Σκαράκης, Κυριάκος Σταυριανουδάκης, Ηλίας Χορευτάκης.

    Τέλος, αξίζει να αναφερθούμε και να σταθούμε στο χωριό «Βλάτος» και στους ανθρώπους του. Ένα μικρό χωριό, στην καρδιά της Κισσάμου, που ευθύνη και χρέος όλων μας είναι να στηρίξουμε την προσπάθειά των κατοίκων του να παρουσιάζουν τέτοιες εκδηλώσεις απαράμιλλης ομορφιάς αλλά και πηγής έμπνευσης και σκέψης.

    Η εταιρεία μας για ακόμη μια φορά γίνεται αρωγός και είναι παρούσα σε οτιδήποτε καλό έχει να προσφέρει και να αναδείξει αυτός ο τόπος. «Τα δοξάρια της Κισσάμου» είναι εδώ! Απολαύστε τα !!!

    • “Sole Voyage” which comprises her own original music and the excitingly unusual combinations of Cretan melodies woven into a tapestry of Jazz with Polyrhythmic Percussion. The album won the best jazz album at the “academia awards” in 2016
    • Her latest album “Hidden Trails” was released in November 2021. Her inspiration for this album stems from her respect for those who, against all odds, stand up to an overpowering enemy In order to defend their freedom, beliefs and rights.

    Maria Manousaki invokes images of traditional Cretan Folk melodies into which she weaves bursts of New York Jazz with middle eastern elements. Her multicultural and distinguished musicians add their own Ethnic color to her compositions. The result creates an ear fest of vibrant, dramatic and exhilarating sounds on the one hand, and expressive, melancholic melodies on the other.

    Ένα μεγάλο ευχαριστώ στην ΕΡΤ1 που αφιέρωσε τηλεοπτικό χρόνο για το φεστιβάλ μας και την ανάδειξή του.

    Maria Manousaki was born in Johannesburg of bicultural parentage.After completing the English Royal School of Music Violin examinations, Maria graduated from the Greek Conservatory Filippos Nakas with a Jazz Violinist Degree. She received a scholarship from the world renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA, earning an Honours Degree in Professional Music in 2002.

    The highlight of the Marmitas band is the young and very talented singer Mania, an exceptional voice somewhat reminiscent of Amy Winehouse’s, surrounded by long time experienced musicians. Their repertoire oscillates between Elvis, Django Reinhardt, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Beatles, Ella Fitzgerald and more.
    Due to their seven year experience of performing in various kinds of elite hotels the band can adapt its show according to different types of audiences adjusting to the ambiance and the feeling of the event creating either a relaxing or a dancing atmosphere.
